Director of Engineering — Finance Engineering

Krakow, Małopolskie, Poland

Category: Engineering
Job ID: R_106692
Job Type: Regular

Job Description:

At Remitly, we believe everyone deserves the freedom to access, move, and manage their money wherever life takes them. Since 2011, we’ve tirelessly delivered on our promise to customers sending money globally, providing secure, simple, and reliable ways to manage their money, ensuring true peace of mind. Whether it’s supporting loved ones back home, growing a business across continents, or pursuing new opportunities abroad, we’re not just here to move money— we’re here to move our global customers forward.
We’re looking for builders, reimaginers, and global thinkers who want to work at the intersection of technology, trust, and transformation. If that’s you and you’re ready to do the most meaningful work of your career—we invite you to join over 2,800 passionate Remitlians worldwide who are united by our vision to transform lives with trusted financial services that transcend borders.

About the Role:

Every Remitly transfer has to be recorded, reconciled, and reported with precision – it's how we keep the trust of customers, auditors, and regulators. Finance Engineering is the foundation behind that promise: the systems for Accounting Product, Reconciliation, and the Finance Data Platform that turn every movement of money into a clean, auditable financial record.

We're hiring a Director of Engineering for Finance Engineering to lead this space into its next chapter: from bespoke, internally-built systems toward a data-centric architecture that integrates cleanly with best-in-class, off-the-shelf financial platforms. This function sits inside Finance, reporting through the Chief Accounting Officer.

You'll set direction and architecture, grow the managers and senior engineers on the team, and stay close enough to the work to engage your strongest engineers as a peer. The way finance systems get built is also changing–engineers working alongside AI agents, and increasingly agents composing parts of the work directly–and designing for that future is part of the job.

You Will:

  • Own the multi-year strategy for Finance Engineering, and translate the Finance organization’s needs into a roadmap your teams can deliver against on a rhythm partners can feel.
  • Lead the evolution of the technology and architecture roadmap, including build-vs-buy calls.
  • Hold the reliability, correctness, and compliance bar for systems of record that auditors and regulators depend on, and make the deciding call on trade-offs with serious consequences.
  • Be the technical leader your strongest engineers want to work for: earn credibility with senior and staff engineers, go deep when it counts, and grow the managers who will lead this space next.
  • Design the geographic workforce plan and drive hiring and succession.

You Have:

  • 8+ years of technical leadership experience, including 5+ leading multiple teams within a domain.
  • A history of building and operating financial, data, or large distributed systems that other teams and stakeholders depend on. Experience with accounting, ledger, reconciliation, or payments systems is a big plus.
  • The technical depth to engage principal and staff engineers as a peer, and to step in when a hard problem needs you.
  • Experience with engineering workforce planning and organization design across geographies, and the judgment to run a healthy org without excessive oversight.
  • Comfort holding a clear technical opinion in a room of executives, and moving between business strategy and technical bets in both directions — including with non-technical Finance leadership.
  • A point of view on what an agentic, AI-assisted world means for finance systems and how you’d build for it — not a slogan about using AI more.
  • Strong security and compliance sensibility in a regulated industry (fintech, banking, or payments).
